Farmland crop of white crosses

FAMILYmembers of murdered farmers came together in Ysterberg just outside Polokwane, Limpopo, to plant a white cross for each loved one killed in a farm attack. Event organiser Lita Fourie, who lost her parents on April 16, 2000, on a farm in Phalaborwa, Limpopo, said the white crosses started in 2003 when
farmers started putting crosses on the side of the road in remembrance. Fourie, who put up her family’s
crosses in 2009, said the crosses started to fall over and the whole thing looked untidy.
A farmer in the area dedicated a section of his farm to the cause, which is now known as the White Crosses Monument. The organisers say they are in the process of applying for the place to be made a
permanent monument. Former AWB leader Eugene Terre’Blanche, who was murdered on his farm outside Ventersdorp on April 3, 2010, had a cross planted on the top of the hill by the “Ware Boere Weerstandsbeweging and Geloftevolk Republikeine”. To date, more than 4 000 crosses have been planted on the hill. Many of the crosses have been left unmarked, waiting for family members to come forward.

Andre Visagie leader of the Geloftevolk Republikeine, and former Secratary General of the AWB until the death of Eugene Terreblanche, walks past a cross planted for the Former AWB leader on Satuarday the 2nd of June 2012 at the annual white cross monument "Witkruismonument" in Ysterberg just outside Polokwane.
